Longwood Gardens: 100 Years of Garden Splendor

Sku: 400002942665

Details

On July 20, 1906, industrialist Pierre S. du Pont (1870-1954) purchased a small farm near Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. His purpose was to save a collection of historic trees, some over a hundred years old. His preservation efforts soon blossomed into a full-fledged passion for gardening that has rarely been equaled.

Over the past century Longwood Gardens has matured into one of the world’s great horticultural showplaces. This is the first time its complete story has been told, from the planting of the original arboretum by a Quaker family named Peirce, to Mr. du Pont’s creation of the gardens, conservatory, and fountains, to its transformation from a private estate to a very public garden beginning its second century

The full resources of Longwood’s archives, and those of the Hagley Museum and Library, have been tapped for photographs to illustrate this rich history. This Second Edition has 32 additional pages with 68 new photos for a total of 160 pages and 258 illustrations.

Older readers will find reminders of the Longwood of their youth, while younger readers will discover a fascinating story of gardening on a grand scale. It really has been 100+ Years of Garden Splendor.
